What puts you off of a Drive-In Cinema? Unlike Sandy & Danny’s famous open-top drive-in cinema viewing – most of us don’t have a convertible. Half of the cinema screen is cut off by the car roof, if it’s raining each scene is rudely sliced apart by windscreen wipers, and you have to listen to the audio through a mobile speaker… It’s not quite as romantic as Grease promised it would be.

Out Out Drive-In, a small local initiative, was born in the pandemic. The aim was simple: to fulfil a desire to host a drive-in cinema that enhances the viewing experience rather than hinder it. The drive-in cinema experience was a huge hit, running for three weeks and providing one of the only activities people could partake in
safely during lock-down!
This was a drive-in experience like no other, it was an indoor drive-in. Transforming an open agricultural barn at Newbury Showground, the Out Out Drive-In cinema would allow guests to pull up in their cars and pitch up camp chairs and picnic blankets ready for a cult film-screening! Being under the barn would ensure the event couldn’t be rained off, and guests could purchase food via a mobile app for ultimate comfort.
The Technical Details .
We were enlisted into the project to provide all of the technical aspects. We created the ultimate experience in the UK, with a low pitch LED screen that provided the highest quality picture, professional audio and immersive lighting.
Cinema Screen
We installed a 7.5m x 4m Flown LED Video Wall using Gloshine Legend 3.9mm Curvable. This innovative equipment with its modular design allowed us to create a bespoke screen solution with a fast installation
Venue Lighting
Our event lighting service included a venue colourwash to create ambient lighting as vehicles arrived, along with moving heads to bring additional effect to the room. Contrasted with the rustic barn, creating wow factor for the guests during such a hard time!
Professional Sound
Nearly as important as the film itself, a huge part of the cinema experience is the immersive sound quality. The line-array sound system that we used provided a full cinema-style sound, worlds apart from the mobile speaker audio expected for drive-in cinemas
